Description

Established in 1864, Tahoe City has a rich heritage dating back to the Gold Rush, when fortune hunters passed through on their way to search for silver in the Comstock Lode. A visit to any one of the museums and historical landmarks managed by the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society provides insights into how this town has evolved from frontier outposts to an appealing enclave of lakefront restaurants, homegrown coffee shops, boutiques and private estates. Tahoe City's Lakefront Commons Beach is the heart of the town and provides acres of room to spread out, relax, hear a concert or peruse the Farmer's Market in summer. At the north end, the park blends into Tahoe State Recreation Area, with right-on-the-lake campsites. The adjacent public pier makes a great place to jump into Lake Tahoe. The centrally located Tahoe City Marina is home to the Tahoe Yacht Club which hosts weekly sailing series and other popular nautical events. Located a little higher up on the mountainside of the town, you'll find the world-class cross-country center Tahoe XC, which is the launching point to an outdoor enthusiast's Never-Never Land. Mountain bikers, hikers and runners can stretch out and experience stellar lake views, while undertaking the challenge presented by the web of trails and singletrack. In the winter, 65 kilometers of groomed cross-country track branch out from the center. Also in the winter, the town hosts Snowfest, North Lake Tahoe's version of Mardi Gras, with parades, live music, and snow play. A mélange of playful year-round activities, boutique shops, acclaimed restaurants and seasonal festivals awaits every visitor and local of the beautiful Tahoe City. Tahoe City is located just minutes from Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Sunnyside and Homewood Resort and connected to these iconic destinations by a paved bike bath that runs along the Truckee River and the shores of Lake Tahoe.
