In 1986 Harrelson founded The Harrelson Group, Public Relations and Marketing firm in Pawleys Island, S.C. Clients included resort development, financial, professional, industrial, retail, trade, political, cable television, civic and others. He developed and implemented public relations and marketing plans to accomplish client objectives through communications methods including: News media relations, special events/community development, internal communications and collateral materials. Harrelson has been particularly successful at identifying and handling client news and feature material to earn media exposure in National wire services, The Today Show, National Public Radio, CNN, the Washington Post, local and regional television, Golf Digest (center spread), Southern Living (front cover) and in every daily United States newspaper. Proper marketing is key while selling real estate. That, along with pricing and product, is most important.


As President, Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce in 1990-1991 following Hurricane Hugo, Harrelson arranged a private meeting with President George H.W. Bush in the Roosevelt Room of The White House West Wing, where he asked the President for positive comments about the battered South Carolina Coast before the National press. Cal also created what is todays’ most popular and sought after Chamber program, Leadership Georgetown.


Previously, Harrelson was the Director of Reagan-Bush Campaign ’84 for South Carolina, Directed successful Congressional campaigns; and he was Director of fundraising for the South Carolina Republican Party. In addition, he has been Director of Santee Cooper Country (Division of S.C. PRT), directing National and regional promotion of recreation and tourism around Lakes Marion and Moultrie. As director of public relations for Olan Mills’ funded Wachesaw Plantation in Murrells Inlet, SC, Cal helped launch public relations activity for this successful private upscale first-ever Intracoastal Waterway residential community.


Harrelson’s education includes Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, South Carolina, where he lettered in five sports, and The University of South Carolina, where he was an active member in leadership with Kappa Alpha Order.


In summary, Harrelson’s professional experience has ranged from regional and national marketing/business development of upscale real estate developments, investment and second-homes; to building tourism trade for resort communities; and to the giving of his time for the betterment of his community, thus, named a “Kentucky Colonel”. Cal is also an artist, painting the South Carolina State Palmetto Tree called “Calmettos” (www.Calmettos.com) that are hanging in such places as the SC Governor’s Mansion, halls of Congress, SC State Museum, SC Statehouse, the home of US UN Ambassador Haley, home of US Swiss Ambassador Ed McMullen; Trump Tower, California home of The Beach Boys keyboardist Bruce Johnston, radio personality Laura Ingraham, golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, Lt.
