Salzburg is located on the Salzach river in the foothills of the Apls. The city offers a pleasant lifestyle as a unique, approachable metropolis with its fascinating fortress, cathedral, numerous bell towers and beautiful baroque style buildings. In December the city fills with tourists attracted by the charming holiday markets set against the beautiful backdrop of the Apls. Salzburg is the capital of the federal state of the same name, with approximately 146,000 residents, the fourth largest city after Vienna, Graz and Linz. The main sources of revenue for the city for many centuries were salt extraction and trade, along with metal and gold mining. The Hohensalzburg fortress dates back to the eleventh century and is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe and is an important symbol of the city. The most famous Salzburg citizen is the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for which the city also bears an alternate name "Mozartstadt" (the city of Mozart). The historic center of the city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Other attractions include the Salzburg Festival and many interesting museums. The real estate market in Salzburg is very dynamic. Recently renovated apartments often come with a price of 4000 euros per square meter, and because of the lack of building activity, it is hard to predict the end of the dizzying increases in prices. Affluent buyers may be interested in an historic mansion or a modern luxury apartment in the historic downtown, from which to enjoy a breathtaking view of the ‘Alter Markt’ and the Salzach river. In the nearby Neustadt neighborhood are numerous prestigious villas from the Gründerzeit period. This is also home to the famous Trapp villa of the 1965 film ‘The Sound of Music’. The lovely Parsch neighborhood features ample green space and beautiful private gardens. Lovers of modernity may find their dream house in Maxglan. Nature lovers who seek tranquility do well to browse historic country houses and exclusive villas in the outskirts of Salzburg or along the beautiful Wolfgansee.
