Description
An Unparalleled Historical Gem in Todi, Umbria
Nestled in the central heart of Umbria, Italy's "Green Heart," and specifically in Todi, an ancient Etruscan city of incomparable beauty, we are proud to present a truly unique opportunity. Perched like a pearl on a hill overlooking the Tiber Valley, Todi boasts a rich, millennia-old history and vibrant traditions. Conveniently located less than an hour from Rome via the A1 highway and easily accessible from Perugia via the E45 expressway, this remarkable property offers both seclusion and connectivity.
Just a few meters from Todi's magnificent Cathedral, we offer for sale a former monastic building, originally constructed by the revered Order of Templar Monks. Renowned environmental architect Richard Levine, a lecturer at the University of Lexington and co-director at the University of Kentucky, and a pioneer in sustainable solar urban design and city-region theory, has famously lauded Todi in publications from both 1994 and, more recently, 2024, as "The Most Livable City in the World."
Brief Historical Overview
Bearing the ancient motto 'NON NOBIS, NON NOBIS DOMINE GLORIAM, SED NOMINI TUO' (Not to us, not to us, Lord, but to your name be the glory), documented sources within the 'Capitular Archives' trace the monastery's construction to the early 11th century. Its presence is meticulously recorded in every subsequent regulatory plan of the Municipality of Todi.
The monks established themselves in the Monastery around 1133, transforming it into a vital spiritual and economic hub for the town's inhabitants and surrounding districts. As was common in medieval monastic communities, houses for families were built nearby, fostering a dynamic exchange of goods, services, and spiritual life between the populace and the monks.
Following the dissolution of the Templar Order in 1307, the monastery was entrusted to the minor order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre until the early 1500s. Upon that order's dissolution, the monastery was then managed by the Order of the Poor Clares, cloistered nuns, who diligently preserved and administered it until the mid-1800s. At that time, the Curia of Todi deconsecrated the church and sold the property to private individuals. While specific details of subsequent building transformations have been lost over time, plans of the monastery consistently appear in numerous historical deeds from the 1600s to the present day, attesting to its enduring presence.
