Sintra is a Portuguese city in the Lisbon district and conurbation, integrating the north-western part (Greater Lisbon).
Sintra is the seat of Sintra County, with an area of 319.23 km²[2] and 385 954 inhabitants (2021), divided into 11 municipalities. The municipality borders the municipality of Mafra to the north, Loures, Odivelas and Amadora to the east, Oeiras to the southeast, Cascais to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It is of national importance, being the second largest municipality in Portugal after Lisbon. Its main centres include the towns of Queluz and Agualva-Cacem, as well as the city of Sintra itself. The territory is very heterogeneous, with the municipalities on the coast and in the north still forested and rural, in contrast to the urbanised municipalities in the south, which have developed due to better accessibility and proximity to the capital.
