No one is immune to the charms of the Madeira Island farms and their knowledge has earned the attention of scholars such as Raimundo Quintal, Rui Vieira, Sainz Trueva or Francisco Clode. Today, fortunately, the idea prevails that they are an irreplaceable value, an oasis of history, fresh air, botanical and architectural diversity, especially in Funchal, and it is urgent to restore them by creating the conditions for the toilets to prosper. Travelers' references to Madeiran farms go back more than four centuries. It is, however, throughout the 19th century that these testimonies become more abundant. By that time, Madeira was beginning to be a well-known therapeutic tourism resort across Europe. The writer Júlio Dinis, who was in Funchal between 1869 and 1871 on an air cure, wrote, with some daring, that «to live well in Madeira you have to live in one of those 'cottages'. Raul Brandão, in 1924, was also not immune to the sensual appeal of these sweet refuges of intimacy: «this was done to live isolated with a woman and voluptuousness, between the walls of sumptuous farms where the greenery overflows».
