It is located to the north, the exit to Geres and Chaves and extends between the slopes of Serra do Carvalho. It is in this parish that the River Este is born, here still limited to a small trickle of water that will empty 35 km further on, in the River Ave. There is an abundance of historical remains in Braga and its surroundings that attest to the centuries-old occupation by man in this territory, namely, the existence of settlements that date back to prehistoric times: Castro de Santa Marta, Citania de Briteiros and Roman ruins on the hill of Maximinos. Braga is over 2,250 years old. It was the capital of Galicia. Later, during its conquest by the Romans (250 BC), it played a prominent role in the region and was renamed Bracara Augusta, in honor of Emperor Augustus. Later it continued to maintain a relevant importance, under the influence of the Catholic Church and the power of its Archbishops who, for centuries, maintained a strong rivalry with Santiago de Compostela. Remember the title used 'Archbishop of Braga and Primate of Spain'. People with varied origins and cultures (Celts, Romans, Swabians, Goths and Arabs) passed through here and remained before the territory came under the domain of the kingdom of Leon. But it was an unstable domain because they were threatened by the Moors who, sometimes winning, sometimes losing their possession, until the definitive Christian conquest was verified and the foundations laid at the origin of Portugal. From Braga several Roman roads leave. One of them, the Via Romana XVII heading north, connecting Bracara Augusta to Asturica Augusta, passed through S. Mamede d'Este, heading from there to Povoa de Lanhoso, then crossing the Geres mountain range to Astorga, in Asturias. On foot, on horseback or with the help of oxcarts, people, animals and goods passed through it on their way to the traditional fairs, or towards the popular Minho pilgrimages, which were celebrated everywhere in monasteries, abbeys and churches, as Mrs. do Sameiro, Bom-Jesus do Monte, Santa Marta, Nª. Mrs. da Abadia or S. Bento da Porta Aberta. This road was also frequented by pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela and it was through it that, already in the 19th century, Maria da Fonte passed, on her way to Braga (Gualtar), leading a movement of popular revolt, Patuleia. There are still some sections of this Roman road, namely between S.Mamede d'Este and Povoa de Lanhoso. The abandonment to which it was left with the opening of new communication routes, contributed to its degradation. The advance of vegetation and the erosion of time left irrecoverable marks. But if Braga has a valuable monumental heritage, in S. Mamede, in addition to the aforementioned Roman road, only a few 'landmarks' are identified, not always dated, which date back to much more recent times (16th century and following): Chapel of S.Simao, Chapel of S.Sebastiao and some farms. Lugar do Paco in this parish owes its name to the existence, during the 15th to 19th centuries, of a space for the gathering of ecclesiastics, linked to the Archbishopric of Braga, and which was known as 'Quinta do Paco'. The few ruins that existed disappeared with the cultivation of fields and the construction of houses. The farm gate will remain, with the coat of arms that identifies the link to the Archbishopric. It was here, in the fields of this valley that, during the French invasions, one of the battles between the Portuguese troops and the invading army took place. The Portuguese troops, commanded by General Gomes Freire de Andrade, would be reduced and, with the support of the people, managed to sustain the forces commanded by General Soult for a few days, until they were forced to retreat. Gastronomic references in the region: Minho gastronomy is relevant for the quality of the food it uses, for the seasonings and for the way they are treated in the region's traditional recipes. Worth mentioning are the pork sarrabulho, veal, roast kid, cod 'a Narcisa', lamprey, green broth, chicken rice 'pica no chao', 'conventual' sweets, Abade de Priscos pudding , Cantinho frying pans, french toast, vermicelli and the typical vinho verde. Origins of Casa do Paco: It is a house with 542 m2 that integrates a property with 9,011 m2 and originates from a stone farmhouse, from the 19th century. XVII that the current owners rebuilt and expanded, maintaining the original design and characteristics of the rural buildings in this region. Its interior is very welcoming, highlighting the existing furniture and decorative pieces. It can accommodate 10 people in 5 bedrooms (4 bedrooms with a double bed and 1 with 2 single beds), 4 of which have a private bathroom. You can use a lounge with more than 80 m2, the dining room, the library and the fully equipped kitchen. Outside, a large garden area and a swimming pool form a harmonious whole, perfectly integrated with the surroundings. Located outside the urban agglomerations, in a protected and absolutely peaceful area, it fits in with the Serra do Carvalho and the valley of the River Este, with the city of Braga in the background.
