Then again, during World War II it became a refuge for important soldiers, first German and then American, and then returned to being the residence of the family whose nobility has Spanish origins.
The villa is large enough to accommodate several people at once, and for decades it was the place where family members and their guests would gather and enjoy some rest in the countryside.
Those who could not be accommodated at the family's main residence in Lecce were housed away from prying eyes. One anecdote that is told is that a descendant of the family, among other famous mayor of Lecce, had a weakness for beautiful ladies; on a trip to Spain he met a ballerina with whom he had an affair (old photographs were found in the house of the ballerina in question, with various dedications). The dancer visited him in Lecce and stayed in the villa, as she could not be accommodated in the palace in Lecce where his wife was, who was unaware of the affair her husband had and did not like her presence at the palace.
It is also told that the wife of another descendant of the noble family, a woman who loved Greek and Latin, dreamed of a relative who had written a grammar of the ancient Greek language that no one had been able to find. In the dream he told her to look in a specific drawer where the next day she found the manuscript with a new system for learning the stem of verbs.
