HISTORICAL NOTES ON THE DIOTALLEVI PALACE WE ARE A FEW STEPS FROM THE CATHEDRAL OF RIMINI but also from the Domus del Chirurgo and the Galli Theatre, in the historic centre. It is here that you can encounter Palazzo Diotallevi, one of the most important and beautiful historic buildings in the city, and admire the characteristic façade of the building, which until 2014 was obscured by the sheets of cars constantly parked on via Tempio Malatestiano, and then freed from cars . The large palace, which belonged to one of the most important noble families of the city - the Diotallevi marquises - is also known for the important archaeological discovery it made in 1975: the large Roman domus, characterized by the famous "boat" mosaic, basically the first photograph of the port of Ariminum, among the most valuable pieces exhibited in the archaeological wing of the City Museum. The large palace built in 1795 was the subject of a functional restoration by the architect Giuseppe Achilli in the 70s of the last century, which made it possible to find a large Roman domus a few steps from the photo and the theater and to recover its extraordinary treasures, including the famous mosaic known for the scene of the ships entering the port, practically the first photograph of the port of Ariminum, among the most valuable pieces exhibited in the archaeological wing of the City Museum. The large and unfinished palace is placed under the protection of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape due to its importance and beauty. The restoration work to which it was subjected gave an incredible discovery in 1975: a large domus of Palazzo Diotallevi, built between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC and radically renovated around the middle of the 2nd century AD. From a large but sober building it was transformed into a luxurious home, with walls decorated with frescoes and mosaic floors. The large reception room intended for banquets is decorated with the now famous "boat" mosaic, in black and white tiles. In addition to the mosaic, various other finds emerged during the excavations. Like the "Surgeon's House", so called for the "tools of the trade" that were found there, it must have belonged to a doctor, the domus of Palazzo Diotallevi, based on the mosaic with the naval scene (now preserved in the City Museum ), may have been the home of a wealthy maritime entrepreneur.
