Description

An ensemble of buildings that stands out from the usual construction methods of the time – this was master mason Riehmer's idea at the end of the 19th century, which he implemented with flying colors. Because Berlin in the industrialization was characterized by narrow rear buildings with their inner courtyards. Riehmer broke with this scheme - in the spirit of sophisticated living quality - and instead laid out a private road and spacious gardens between the 18 houses. So he created a quiet, green idyll in the middle of the city. The landscaping design of the courtyard garden envisages a variety of uses: in addition to the islands of tranquility embedded in varied planting, there will be meeting zones under old trees, but also natural play areas and a boules area. Garden elements such as floating wooden benches, natural stone and sculptures with paths and beds complement each other harmoniously.Riehmer's Hofgarten is very centrally located and well connected in the middle of Kreuzberg. It is an ideal starting point for people who enjoy the liveliness of the big city with its wide range of offers and at the same time do not want to miss the tranquility of an urban retreat. Hardly any other part of Berlin is as multicultural as Kreuzberg, where a casual, tolerant and open coexistence has developed from a wide variety of life plans. Here, contrasts are seen as an enrichment and diversity is cultivated, which manifests itself above all in the gastronomy with its cuisine from all over the world, at the colorful weekly markets and in the lively streetscape. There the small stationery next to the coffee roaster, there the Turkish greengrocer next to the chic advertising agency, and in the backyard the small variety theater - the colorful mixture makes Kreuzberg so endearing. This special attitude to life is complemented by the numerous parks and green areas as well as the banks of the Landwehr Canal and rounded off by the diverse range of art and culture. During the restoration of Riehmers Hofgarten, monument conservators and restorers have tracked down the smallest details of the construction period elements. Many questions arose: How were the walls covered and what colors were the wooden elements painted with? Where were traces of a primer? How were the stucco elements color coordinated? All conceivable clues were followed - and sometimes they even hid behind skirting boards as fragments of wallpaper. Carpenters, painters and locksmiths have carefully worked on the details and combined the old with the new.
