Architecture and history:
The first known lord of the place was Jacques de Saint-Yrier in 1513.
In the 19th century, the castle belonged to the domain of Betoulles, which became Leptoules. It was sold by Mr Pelletier, former owner of the Leptoules estate, in the
second half of the 20th century.
The building was completely restored in 1965. All that remains of the old castle is a round tower, a few sections of wall and the old ditches.
Located along the road that connects the village of La Roche to the village of Barraud, the Château de Lavaud belongs to a vast estate with a pond.
The castle today consists of a main building of rectangular plan to which is attached a circular tower.
The main building, built in regular courses of granite, rises on four levels (a basement floor housing a garage, a ground floor, a floor and a floor under the roof)
and has five bays on the west facade. and four on the east facade.
Marked by corner chains and freestone flashing, the building is covered with a hipped slate roof surmounted by two zinc finials and surmounted by a large brick
chimney stack.

The overhanging parts of the roof are supported by carved wooden corbels which rest on the main building. The attic is open to the west by three granite hipped
dormers, topped with a zinc finial identical to those of the roof.
All the openings have semi-circular arched lintels with flat bands, projecting sills and chained abutments in dressed stone (granite).
The north gable of the building is blind.
Against the south gable of the main building is attached a circular tower, the only vestige of the old castle. About twelve meters high, it served as the basis for the
construction of the current castle.
Built in granite rubble, it rises on two levels and is covered with a conical slate roof, some of which, cut in tortoiseshell, form bands that punctuate the roof.
Crowned with a zinc finial, the roof is also surmounted by a brick chimney stack.
As for the main building, sculpted wooden corbels support the overhanging parts of the roof.
The walls of the tower, about two meters thick, have been consolidated, as well as part of the crenellated walls that once made it possible to monitor the surrounding
countryside.
The two access doors on the ground floor and upstairs have harped jambs and straight chamfered lintels in cut stone, the upstairs door also being surmounted by
a relieving arch.

The transom windows that light up the floor have straight chamfered cut stone frames, while the door to the floor gives access to the part of the
crenellated walls which has been preserved and which was once used for surveillance.
Inside, the ground floor, which must have been used as a chapel, consists of a square vaulted room, where the remains of a stone crest decorated with
fleur-de-lys and daisies were found. an ermine tail, the whole surmounted by an accolade groove.
The hall on the first floor, converted into a bedroom, is hexagonal. The moats of the castle have been refurbished.
A small bridge, preceded by an imposing freestone gate whose roof is identical to that of the main building, allows you to step over them to access
the courtyard of the castle.
In the courtyard and the garden were placed an apple press, millet piles, drinking troughs, a measuring stone, a Gallo-Roman funerary urn from the
neighboring necropolis and an oil press.
Outside the castle, at the entrance to the property, are exposed monolithic basins as well as granite millstones.
These are the old millstones of the Lavaud mill, the castle originally belonging to the same estate as the mill.
