The municipality of Moena is located in the Dolomites at an altitude between 1,094 and 2,823 meters above sea level, while the municipal capital is located at 1,184 meters above sea level, crowned clockwise by the Latemar groups (Monte Toac, Sas from Ciamp), the Catinaccio (Roda di Vaèl), the Marmolada and Cima Bocche (to the south).
The municipality includes the entire Avisio basin between the hamlet of Pezzé, upstream (Rif dal Termen, ancient border between the episcopal principalities of Trento and Bressanone), up to the narrow valley between Forno and Mezzavalle (fraction of the municipality of Predazzo); However, the upper part of the Rif de Costalongia valley (divided between the municipalities of Soraga and Vigo di Fassa) and a large part of the orographic right of Valsorda (municipality of Predazzo) are excluded, while the large area of Lusia belongs to Moena. -Bocche, beyond the watershed of the chain of the same name, in Val Travignolo. The eastern end of the municipality, beyond the watershed of the San Pellegrino Pass, falls within the Piave basin and is bathed by the Biois torrent.
The capital is located at the geographical base of the Val di Fassa, before the the Avisio torrent flows into the long valley stretch that takes it to Val di Fiemme; right in the town, the watercourse receives the waters of the Rio San Pellegrino and the Rio Costalunga, which descend from the passes of the same name. Inside the basin there are also the hamlets of Someda (to the east, at the base of the Sas da Pesmeda ), Sorte-Sort (to the west, under the Sas da Ciamp) and Pezzé-Pecé (to the north, along the state road towards Soraga); more isolated and higher is Penìa (Peniola), located halfway up the coast to the south-west on the slopes of Latemar. Forno, located along the Avisio 4 km south of the capital, represented an autonomous municipality until 1928 together with the overlying hamlet of Medil, and maintains its own characteristics at an identity and linguistic level (flamazzo dialect, of Trentino stock, compared to the variant moenat of Fassano Ladin spoken in the rest of the municipality).
