Description
With 611ha, Herdade da Corte do Bispo, which is currently being used for agricultural and agroforestry activities, is the largest property in the municipality of Lagos, and has the potential to be transformed into an area of substantial regional and international importance through this Sports Centre, aimed at both clubs and individuals, both professionals and amateurs.
The Project is part of the development priorities in strategic guidance plans, namely the Algarve Regional Land Use Plan and the Lagos Municipal Master Plan, with several public and private entities having expressed their interest in implementing this project.
With its approval as an Economic Development Centre (NDE) and the Recognition of Public Interest (RIP), the State clearly expresses its intention to support a project of this nature, allowing its financial viability.
The project will have a significant positive impact on the regional economy, as well as contributing to national and international objectives in the conservation and environmental protection sector, through the implementation of innovative strategies in the construction, energy and natural resource management sectors.
Four professional sports groups were initially identified as those that depend on training equipment and favourable weather conditions for as long as possible, and that have the necessary financial means to benefit from them and make the most of them. The target groups, both at team and individual level, are:
- Professional football;
- Professional rugby;
- Professional cycling;
- Professional athletics.
These groups already travel in considerable numbers to the Algarve during the winter period, but of the two conditions they need, equipment and climate, the Algarve can only offer the climate.
Although the main target group for the project is the world of professional sports, many other target groups can be identified. These groups will provide complementary support for the project. They include:
- Individual sports practitioners;
- The general public;
- Sports travel and event industry;
- Sponsors;
- Sports federations;
- Sports organizations;
- Other sports institutions;
- Sports event directors;
- Health professionals;
- Health insurers.
A plot of land with an area of 260.2000ha will be allocated to this project and the total cost of implementing this project is estimated at €90,000,000.00.
