Brancanes Convent, a unique property | Setúbal Located on the northern edge of the city of Setúbal, the Convent is located in Quinta dos Meses, which is on the edge of the city of Setúbal, constituting an authentic promontory over the Arrábida mountain range and the Palmela Castle hill. It consists of a plot of land with a total area of 45,080.00 m2. Of the set of buildings that make up the property, the Brancanes Convent stands out. Convent Areas: Total land area: 12,600m2 Implementation area: 5,110m2 Gross construction area: 8,773m2 Gross private area: 5,500m2 Gross dependent area: 3,273m2 Property classified by the current PDM as 'SPECIAL USE SPACES', allowing, after prior approval by the Setubal City Council, different uses, taking into account the presented project. In July 2008, the project for the rehabilitation and transformation of the Brancanes Convent into a hotel equipment space was submitted for prior approval. The project received a favourable opinion from the Municipal Council, with the safeguarding of constraints such as accessibility and landscape. Brief descriptive memory: The former Convent and Seminary of Our Lady of the Angels of Brancanes, was founded in 1682, its construction was directed by Captain Pedro da Silva Dodarte, by diligence of Friar das Chagas, with the royal support of D. Pedro II. It belonged to the Order of Friars Minor. The church was opened for worship in 1696. Due to the earthquake of 1755, the Municipal Council of Setúbal began to operate in the Convent of Brancanes. During the French invasions, the convent was occupied by Napoleon's troops, who turned it into a military hospital, violating several tombs in order to steal anything of value that was found there. In 1811, the reconstruction of the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, of the Third Order of St. Francis, began. It had been desecrated and destroyed by French soldiers in March 1808. On May 10, 1812, worship began to be held in the church again. In 1910, on the night of October 4-5, the convent was set on fire. From that year onwards, it housed military units, beginning a process of transformation/adaptation to new functions throughout the 20th century, which did not respect the nature of the property. From 1981 onwards, the Health Service Battalion (BSS) occupied the former facilities of the extinct Coastal Artillery Regiment, in the former Seminary for Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady of the Angels, formerly the Convent of Brancanes. It also served as the Brancanes Prison Establishment (1998-2005). In November 1998, the building was decommissioned from its previous military functions and reassigned to the Ministry of Justice. In 2007, it was acquired by its current owners. The convent building has a rectangular plan, consisting of two long longitudinal wings and three transversal rooms, which form two identical squares, with central cloisters. There is a space that occupies half of one of the longitudinal wings, adjacent to the first cloister where the church dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels was located. On the ground floor there were three round-arched porticos that opened onto an atrium that was transformed into a chapel when the Convent was occupied by the now-defunct Setúbal Health Service Battalion (BSS) from 1981 onwards. To the left of this space is the building's entrance hall, where blue and white tile panels representing the daily activities of the friars are preserved. In July 2008, the project for the renovation and transformation of the Brancanes Convent into a hotel facility was submitted for prior approval. The project has already received a favourable opinion from the Municipal Council, with the safeguarding of constraints such as accessibility and landscape.
