Arona is one of the major commercial and tourist centers of Lake Maggiore, certainly the largest of the lower lake. With its approx. 15,000 inhabitants, is the most populous city on the lake, again if we consider separately the different centers that only since 1939 have been united to form Verbania (whose conglomerate gathers about 30,000 people, including Intra, Pallanza, Suna and other hamlets). Arona is also the largest port on the lake, the official seat of Navigazione Lago Maggiore, as well as an important hub for road and rail communications.
Lake Maggiore is the second biggest Italian lake after Lago di Garda, its eastern bank is in Lombardy, the western in Piedmont while the northern section extends into Switzerland. The charming little towns along its shores are popular resorts today with their grand hotels recalling the Belle Epoque.
