Situated in the northernmost part of the eastern shore of Lake Como, Colico lies close to what was once a swamp and is now the Pian di Spagna and Lago Mezzola Nature Reserve. The area is characterised by the variety and beauty of its landscapes, including the imposing Monte Legnone behind it and the four hills of morainic origin, the three Montecchi and the Olgiasca peninsula, that border the lake. A combination of lake and mountain area that makes it an ideal and sought-after destination for those who love nature, relaxation and history but at the same time enjoy sport, an active life and entertainment. Thanks to its breezy location and numerous beaches, the town has over the years become an internationally renowned location for water sports. Mount Legnone, at 2609 metres, is popular with hikers for its countless routes for all levels of fitness and for the breathtaking views it affords. For cyclists and mountain bikers, the varied trail network offers ancient paths halfway up the mountainside and the cycle path to Bormio in Alta Valtellina. Colico is also particularly suitable for travellers wishing to travel to different towns and points of interest: the town has been an important communication centre since ancient times, as roads from Lecco, Valtellina and Valchiavenna intersect at Colico. Precisely because of its strategic position, it is an area rich in history, as demonstrated by the two military forts, the 17th-century Forte di Fuentes and Forte Montecchio Nord, dating back to the First World War. The former was built by the Count of Fuentes during the Spanish domination to control communication routes, the latter was built between 1912 and 1914 to close off the route to Milan. Not to be forgotten is the ancient village of Fontanedo, once inhabited by numerous farming families and characterised by the tower built in 1357 by the Visconti family on the defensive line of the Alto Lario to protect access to the famous ‘Sentiero del Viandante’ (Wayfarer's Path). Colico is not only home to fortresses, but also to expressions of faith such as the marvellous Abbey of Piona. Situated on the Olgiasca Peninsula and with an exceptional view of the western coast of the Lario, the church with its atmospheric cloister is a rare example of Lombard Romanesque architecture. Other churches worth mentioning for their artistic testimony are the Church of San Bernardino in Villatico and the Oratory of San Rocco. Finally, the splendid lakeside promenade, the scene of events that enliven the summer evenings and from which one can enjoy a beautiful panorama of the western shore of the lake.
