Description

Greve in Chianti and Figline Incisa Valdarno (FI), Badia di Montescalari:
In an exclusive location nestled between Chianti Classico and Florence, lies the ancient complex known as Badia di Montescalari, consisting of a Benedictine abbey, two farmhouses, and 101 hectares of land.
History: Founded in the High Middle Ages, probably around 1040, by Benedictine monks as a residence for pilgrims, it represents an important example of religious and historical architecture. It was inhabited until 1930 by the monastic community of Montescalari, and was later sold at auction to the noble Rosselli Del Turco family, who maintained ownership until the early 1990s. The property can be converted into a hospitality facility.
Access: The complex is accessed via the municipal road Badia Montescalari, which branches off from Provincial Road No. 66, Panca Pancuccia. This road is unpaved, about 2.5 km long, and in fair maintenance condition.
Description: The property comprises three main buildings and approximately 101 hectares of land, divided as follows:
A) The imposing Abbey, about 5000 sqm over three levels, partially used as a hospitality facility and partially as the former Benedictine abbey. The ground floor includes six storage and utility rooms, a church, a library, kitchen, 15 bedrooms, five bathrooms, and an open courtyard. The first floor includes a loggia overlooking the inner courtyard, 25 rooms, 13 bathrooms, and various hallways. The basement and cellar levels include the restaurant kitchen and dining room of the hospitality area and the stables.
B) A farmhouse of about 860 sqm over two levels, partially habitable, with 10 rooms and a wood oven on the ground floor, and 11 rooms on the first floor.
C) A two-level farmhouse of about 400 sqm consisting of:

Ground floor: living room, rustic kitchen, two storage rooms, and oven; an internal staircase leads to a studio apartment with bathroom.

First floor: independent apartment with living room, kitchen, two bedrooms, and a bathroom.

The property includes a well about 80 meters deep with a capacity of approximately 80 liters/second and 101 hectares of land, mostly woodland with some arable land suitable for replanting olive trees and vineyards.

Technical Features: The abbey is still clearly visible. The main materials used are stone, terracotta, and wood. Originally it had a bell tower, which was destroyed during World War II. One of the bronze bells was created by Andrea del Verrocchio. Inside, there are still 15th-century frescoes in need of restoration. The two farmhouses require renovation and are located about 100 meters from the abbey. The location is highly panoramic and 16 km from the A1 highway exit.
