Description
The building known as ‘Cristo Re’ (Christ the King) stands majestically in the upper part of Erba, in Via di Crotto Rosa, one of the most picturesque areas of the city, a few steps from the historic ‘Contrada Villincino’. Built towards the end of the 19th century, this building, steeped in history and charm, has witnessed the passage of time and sits on a hill dominating the landscape, offering a breathtaking view that sweeps from the terraced garden of over 5,000 square metres to the blue of the surrounding smaller lakes, creating a panorama of rare beauty that enchants the eye. With a gross floor area of over 3,000 square metres, the structure is an example of robust load-bearing masonry architecture, divided into two distinct sections, connected by an elegant covered passageway that, on the first floor, arches above the street and offers a unique connection to the area. Purchased by a religious institute at the end of the 1950s, the building has been transformed over the years into a rest home for nuns, with constant interventions to improve its functionality and comfort. The numerous renovations and adaptations include the construction of a lift system, the expansion of the rooms and the installation of modern hydrothermal and sanitary systems. Over time, the building was equipped with a new heating plant, while the roofs were completely redone with the installation of new tiles. The garden, which was already stretching out in all its beauty, saw the paving of the paths and a careful arrangement of the entrance. Over the last few years, major fireproofing work, the rebuilding of the boilers and a series of extraordinary interventions have been carried out, further enhancing this structure, making it a symbol of care and constant improvement over time.
