Historic quinta (estate) whose foundation began during the first settlement, near the primitive Church of Santo Antonio, on the path to Curral das Freiras and Santo Amaro. It appears that land clearing in this area of the city began quite early in the 15th century, and Quinta de Santo Antonio already existed as a defined space in the 16th century, linked to the Convent of Santa Clara. The house that exists today must have been expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries, now harmonized by extensive renovations in the 19th century.
Its facade faces the amphitheater of the city, with rhythmic fenestration on the upper floor and shutters on the lower floor, previously dedicated to agricultural storage areas. Despite its transformation in the 19th century into a leisure quinta, with its lawn garden and flower beds, delimited by crafted pebble pavements, Quinta de Santo Antonio always had an agricultural dimension, with various warehouses distributed throughout the grounds as well as a winepress and caretakers' houses.
It was established as a property for supply and agricultural income for the owners who possessed other houses in the city, such as on Rua das Merces and Aljube. The owners are related to the most traditional Madeiran families, such as the Santana de Vasconcellos, Leal de Freitas Branco, Perestrello, and Lambert. Several branches of this family are linked to the Viscounts of Casa Branca, Viscounts of Porto da Cruz, Counts of Lambert, Counts of Nova-Goa, and Counts of Almada.
