A charming village perched on the mountains behind Domaso, Vercana enjoys a dominant position with an enchanting view of the lake, the Lower Valtellina and the peaks that surround the Alto Lario. The village is the ideal destination for hikers and nature lovers; there are numerous itineraries of considerable naturalistic and landscape interest, including the route from the Monti di Vercana to the Alpe di Graglio which crosses beech forests, pastures and flat meadows. The history of Vercana is not different from that of the neighboring towns, subjugated by various dominations and characterized by a strong migration of its inhabitants, mainly towards Palermo, from which they adopted customs and habits that they then imported to their place of origin, enriching it. From a historical-architectural point of view, the religious buildings are worth mentioning, in particular: the parish church of San Salvatore, of uncertain origins but in which frescoes and works of art by various authors of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries stand out (including Antonio Maria Caraccioli, known as the "Caracciolo di Vercana"), representing one of the greatest examples of Baroque architecture on Lake Como; the Church of San Sebastiano a Caino, with its sober and austere shape, completed in the seventeenth century on top of a pre-existing fifteenth-century building; finally the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve, built in 1630 on the site of a votive chapel with the effigy of Mary, as a sign of devotion for the end of the plague epidemic.
