Dongo stands on the plain formed by the mouth of the Albano stream, at the gateway to the unspoilt Albano Valley, with a stupendous view sweeping from Alto Lario to Bellagio. Since antiquity, the village has been economically and historically important; in fact, at the bottom of the valley lies the important San Jorio Pass, which already connected Lake Como to the Swiss Mesolcina Valley in Roman times. A member, together with Gravedona and Sorico, of the ‘Three Parishes’, the municipality began to exploit the valley's iron deposits as early as the 15th century, constructing furnaces and buildings to smelt and process the ore. Over the centuries, mining activity grew, so much so that in 1791 Pietro Rubini from Como founded a foundry in the village. At the end of the 19th century, the mines were definitively abandoned, but in the 20th century the economic development of Dongo increased dramatically with the passage of the foundry to the Falck family, which transformed it into the most important industrial centre in the area. Nowadays, steel activity has declined sharply. However, the name of the municipality is mainly known for the events linked to the end of the Fascist regime: in April 1945, Benito Mussolini's column fleeing to Switzerland was blocked between Musso and Dongo, and the last Fascist hierarchs were executed on the square by the lake. These facts are well documented by the Museo della Fine della Guerra (Museum of the End of the War), located on the ground floor of Palazzo Manzi, which offers an immersive multimedia itinerary aimed at reconstructing episodes linked to the Comasca Resistance and the end of World War II. Palazzo Manzi, seat of the Town Hall, was built in the early 19th century for a local noble family and is one of the most expressive examples of Neoclassicism in Alto Lario. Inside, there are sumptuous rooms such as the Sala d'Oro, the reception hall of the Manzi family characterised by widespread gilding and frescoes, the Cappella dell'Immacolata and the ancient library. Beyond its recent history, there are many other points of interest in the locality, starting with the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria in Martinico, built in the 12th century in the oldest hamlet of the village and remodelled in the early 20th century, while on the lakeshore stands the Parish Church of Santo Stefano, the third rebuilding (18th century) of one of the oldest parish churches in the Lario area and rich in works of art. Not far away is the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Lacrime, built in the 16th century.
