Enclosed in a wide inlet between the slopes of Sasso Pelo and the alluvial plain of the Liro stream, Gravedona ed Uniti is one of the most charming towns on Lake Como thanks to its strategic location and the beauty of its surroundings. Walking along the elegant lakefront, one can admire the majestic Mount Legnone and the outline of the ancient Abbey of Piona on the opposite shore and in the distance the mouth of Valtellina and Valchiavenna, while behind the town center green valleys dotted with unique churches and historic villages develop. Gravedona, since 2011 Gravedona ed Uniti following the merger with the municipalities of Consiglio di Rumo and Germasino, is one of the greatest artistic centers of Alto Lario, a town that is told in its churches and monuments of rare beauty, which bear witness to its important past. Of pre-Roman origins, in the Middle Ages it was a prosperous municipality thanks in part to the very valuable Regina road that connected Como to northern Europe. Over time, the area became a center for the spread of Christianity, and Gravedona assumed the symbolic role of the capital of the “Three Parishes.” The town underwent several hegemonies, first falling under the Seigniories of the Visconti and Sforza families, then it was ruled by Duke Gian Giacomo De' Medici known as the Medeghino, and finally it passed to the Spanish, who ceded it to the illustrious Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, who had the Gallio Palace built in 1586. Designed by Tibaldi on the remains of a late antique fortification on a rocky promontory, the building has a square plan with four massive corner towers linked by loggias and a garden with fountains and camellia plants. Not far from the palace is the “Castle,” the historic center, full of small squares, houses leaning against each other, narrow alleys and steep, endless stairways that plunge into the blue lake. Here it is still possible to admire the remains of the old castle walls and the belvedere, called Pra' Castello, from which there is an enchanting view of the Lario. Among the houses in the historic center is also the dwelling where Alessandro Volta stayed during his honeymoon. Toward the Liro stream is the sacred area of Gravedona ed Uniti, where the Church of Santa Maria del Tiglio and the Parish Church of S. Vincenzo stand. A unique masterpiece of Como Romanesque architecture, the baptismal Church of Santa Maria del Tiglio was built in the second half of the 12th century over the earlier early Christian baptistery of San Giovanni and features a façade consisting of white marble and black stone and a frontal bell tower. The interior preserves a mosaic floor and some 14th- and 15th-century frescoes. The Church of St. Vincent, on the other hand, was erected around 1050 on a 5th-century early Christian building and remodeled between the 17th and 18th centuries; of the ancient early Christian structure it preserves the striking crypt dedicated to St. Anthony. Also of particular historical and artistic importance are the other numerous churches scattered throughout the area, including the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (or Convent), built by the Augustinian Friars in the 15th century and completely decorated, the Church of Saints Gusmeo and Matteo, a Romanesque church with frescoes by Fiamminghino, and the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Brenzio, also decorated by Fiamminghino. Nowadays Gravedona ed Uniti is a renowned summer resort, the historic center blending harmoniously with the modern infrastructure, such as renovated accommodation facilities, dynamic commercial activities and areas dedicated to sports, such as the first-rate sports center with athletics track and tennis and soccer fields in the Serenella locality, next to the wonderful beach, the municipal swimming pool and the bicycle and pedestrian routes that connect the town to Dongo and Domaso by skirting the lake.
