Valchiavenna is an Alpine valley in the province of Sondrio in Lombardy, northern Italy. It lies north of Lake Como and is crossed by the rivers Mera and Liro. It can be divided into three parts, which branch off from the confluence of these rivers near Chiavenna, the capital of the region. The village of Gordona in the Valchiavenna region has about 2,000 inhabitants and has been twinned with the village of Menarola since 2015. The municipality on the Mera river lies south of Chiavenna on the slopes of a very attractive hiking area towards the border with Graubünden. The cities of Como (approx. 92 km/1 hour 30 minutes) and Lecco (approx. 63 km/56 minutes) are within easy reach and offer all the amenities needed for daily life, as well as an interesting cultural programme.
