Description
Cassacco Castle truly reflects the romantic idea of a castle, and it is here, just a few kilometers from Udine and at the foot of the Julian Prealps, that we can experience all the charm of the medieval era. Its defensive position has allowed it to preserve many of its original features intact, which have survived to this day. Presumably dating back to the 12th century, the main building was erected over the remains of a 4th-century Romanesque tower. Much of its structure has been preserved to this day. From the top of the towers, you can admire the Julian Alps mountain range. Some modifications were made in the late Middle Ages and in the 15th century, when the charming and historic church of Santa Maria Assunta was built. It would not be a true medieval castle without the stone bridge, which spans the moat and leads to the castle entrance. In addition to the main castle and the church, the property comprises three other structures that were once used as prisons and warehouses. Today, they are renovated homes that form a small hamlet, all surrounded by a large 28,000 m2 park. Over the years, the buildings have been meticulously maintained, with significant consolidation work carried out directly by the Superintendency following the 1976 Friuli earthquake.
