1 bedroom flat in emblematic building of 'Aguas Livres', Lisbon
Designed by Nuno Teotonio Pereira and Bartolomeu Costa in 1953 to integrate the urbanisation plan of the Praca das Aguas Livres area, initiated by the Lisbon City Council, the building became one of the most emblematic of the new architecture of income buildings in the capital. Located at the top of Rato, next to 'Mae d' Agua das Amoreiras' (the main water deposit of Lisbon), the block of buildings extends overlooking the city, with protruding balconies that mark the rhythm of the facades, both in the form and in the modelling of light and shadow.
Teotonio Pereira and Bartolomeu Costa thought of the structure as a small independent community. The living areas are joined by offices and shops, and outdoor circulation between spaces is allowed by longitudinal galleries. Each of the buildings has common service areas, such as laundries, garages, condominium rooms or gardens and interior green spaces, designed by Goncalo Ribeiro Telles. A decorative program that includes mural paintings, mosaics, stained glass windows and reliefs characterises the areas of collective use (facades, atrium, roof), with works by Almada Negreiros, Manuel Cargaleiro, Jorge Vieira, Jose Escada and Frederico George.
The Aguas Livres Block stands out as one of Nuno Teotonio Pereira's most innovative achievements, both in the way the architect designed the daily experience of the spaces in strict symbiosis with the principles of Modern Architecture and in the decisive role that the building played in the renewal of the city's urbanism.
