About Jarabacoa

Jarabacoa has a Tropical rainforest climate, with warm days and mild nights during almost all year, and temperate days and cool nights on winter, due to its tropical location and high elevation (about 529 m above sea level). Visitors have baptized Jarabacoa as 'The City of Everlasting Spring.'

One of the main touristic attractions is the mountains and natural beauty of the area due to its location in the center of the Central Range offering plenty of outdoor activities and excursions.

It is also one of the main access to the Pico Duarte and the Ebano Verde Cientific Reserve. Jarabacoa has three large rivers, Baiguate, Jimenoa and the Yaque del Norte, the last two merge in the Confluencia, continuing on as the Yaque del Norte, the second largest river in the country.
The coldest temperature ever recorded is 7.1 C, on 24 February 2012.

The local economy is based upon agriculture. It is known for its strawberries, coffee, pimento and aj pepper, the last two being grown in green houses. Jarabacoa it is also known for its wide variety of flowers.

9 Things to do in Jarabacoa

Go river rafting in the Yaque del Norte River: Rancho Baiguate run a pretty great rafting trip down a section of the Yaque del Norte River. The rapids go up to level 3 and have names like ‘the toilet’ and the very creative, ‘Monica Lewinsky.’ The guides also put on a great show: diving, jumping, flipping rafts and pulling people in the water. The trip also includes breakfast, a snack and lunch.
Horse-ride to Salto Baiguate: After our white water rafting trip we decided to hire some horses and a guide (from Rancho Baiguate) and go to Salto Baiguate. Although the horse ride doesn’t come as highly recommended as Karin from La Hacienda, it was an enjoyable walk (and sometimes slight gallop) to the falls where you can swim before heading back.
Hike El Mogote: El Mogote is the highest point in the Jarabacoa area and a muddy, sweaty and steep hike to the top. The hike is mostly shady in the early morning and you may see different species of native birds and plants along the way if you are so inclined. But the views alone make this hike worth the hard slog. Be sure to bring plenty of water.
Enjoy a pastry at Panadería La Fleca: This Panadería makes fantastic breads, cakes, cookies and empanadas. It’s a great place to grab a cappuccino, chill out or get your bearings, especially if you just hopped off a Caribe Tours bus.
Get a Presidente in the main town square: Like most Dominican towns, the main square is where you want to be after 4pm. Jarabacoa’s Parque Central is surrounded by several small bars and colmados. There is definitely no shortage of Presidentes or people.
Dine at Jamaca de Dios: This mountain top restaurant is perfect if you’re looking for a swanky night out with spectacular views. The menu is a mix of Dominican and European mains and desserts. On weekends, the top floor of the restaurant rotates but if you happen to go on a week night the manager will be more than willing to give you a quick tour.
Meander through the local market: Jarabacoa’s market is one of the biggest I came across in the Dominican Republic and sells an array of fruits and vegetables. It is a great place to do some grocery shopping and support the local community.
Relive Jurassic Park at Salto de Jimenoa Uno: One of the Dominican Republic’s claims to fame, is that an opening scene of Jurassic Park was filmed at this picturesque waterfall. It is a 15 minute moto ride up to the waterfalls from downtown Jarabacoa.
Take a trip to a Coffee Factory or Plantation: Jarabacoa is surrounded by coffee farms and any moto driver will be more than happy to take you out on a day trip. Otherwise, a short walk to the edge of town will bring you to the Ramirez Coffee Factory where for a small fee you can take a tour (Spanish only) of the factory and sample its product in the nearby visitor center/gift shop.
