The village of Tizzana was built around the castle, which in the thirteenth century was in possession of Pistoia, the cornerstone of the defensive system against the Florentines. In 1252 a battle took place between the armies of the two cities. In 1306 Tizzana passed under Florence and was returned to Pistoia in 1315; ten years later (1325), when it was once again a Florentine possession, the Lucca leader Castruccio Castracani attacked the three Florentine fortresses then existing in the area (Artimino, Carmignano and Tizzana) and only Tizzana managed to resist the siege. The village continued to be considered a primary strategic objective also in the struggle of the Florentines against the Milanese Gian Galeazzo Visconti, at the end of the fourteenth century. In the second half of the fifteenth century Tizzana was closely linked to the disputes between the families of the Panciatichi, who had chosen the village as their home, and of the Cancellieri.
It was one of the centers most affected by the plague of 1523. Later, in the Medici period and Lorraine, the castle decayed, due to its diminished strategic and military importance, and its fortifications gradually declined. In 1772 it was the seat of a podestaria, subject to the royal vicar of Pistoia and suppressed in 1838: its territory then passed under the jurisdiction of the Pistoia vicar.
The village slowly lost its importance, while the hamlets bought it in the plains. The town hall was moved in 1880 to the then hamlet of Quarrata, which became more important both demographically and economically. In 1932, for practical reasons, the seat of the municipality was moved first to Vignole and then to Quarrata: the latter center on 30 July 1959 officially became the capital of the municipality.
Few traces remain of the first city wall that surrounded the central nucleus of the castle which was almost certainly ovoid in shape, while the second and third walls have been destroyed.
Currently the main tower remains the watchtower which today acts as bell tower of the Pieve di San Bartolomeo, the ancient entrance arch to the village dominated by the crests of the podestàs, the Palazzo del Podestà which today is a private home, and the hospital.
