HISTORICAL NOTES:
Villa Costa Righini, also known as Villa Gargani or Villa del Cassero, is a historic building located in the municipality of Serravalle Pistoiese, located in via Castelnuovo / via Baco, in the hamlet of Cantagrillo.
The villa was built between 1712 and 1713 for the Florentine senator Coriolano Montemagni, designed by the architect Pier Antonio Tesi.
When Alessandra Montemagni, the last descendant of her family, married the Napoleonic general from Livorno, Michele Costa Righini from Livorno, the villa passed to her husband's family, remaining among their possessions for more than a century, until 1930. In that year it was ceded to Colonel Gustavo Gargani, who lived there only six years, but was the last to own it in its entirety. In fact, in 1936 it was divided into several properties, a situation accentuated in 1995 when the villa was entirely divided into private apartments.
The building of the villa, located above a balcony overlooking the main passage road of the town, is in the shape of a parallelepiped of three floors, with a rather austere look.
The design of the Italian gardens contrasts with this geometric simplicity, organized around a large circular tank and composed of some box hedges that draw curvilinear forms. On the main axis of the villa, once marked to the external gate by a row of cypresses, of which some specimens remain today, there is also on the rear side of the villa the noble chapel of San Francesco di Paola (1729), with a plan circular and marked by a lively rococo taste. The entire garden is walled and along its perimeter there are four arched portals and two gates.
