According to the Infopedian Dictionary of Toponimy [online]. Porto: Porto Editora, 2003-2018, the name Budens will come from the lower-Latin [Villa] Budensi, "the quinta de Budenso".

Already for other scholars, the toponym "Budens" came from the Arabic «Bu Danis», which was the name of tribe that ruled Alcácer do Sal.

Budens is one of the largest parishes of the Municipality, covering the towns of Burgau, Salema (popular tourist destinations), Vale de Boi, Budens and Figueira.

Burgau is a locality, whose references fall back to the 16th century and which was always focused on the sea and fishing activity.

Even today, next to its welcoming beach it is possible to come across traditional boats, an instrument that pulled the boats ashore, in times further backwards) and some experienced men of the sea patching their nets.

At the top of the cliff, the source of the beach (at the top of "Rua da Fortaleza" and next to a modern hotel unit) we can observe the ruins of the old Fort, built from 1640 and that, after the Earthquake of 1755, gave way to a Battery, artilhada, to defend the locality and its cove. This point, although abandoned, provides an extraordinary view over one of the most beautiful stretches of the Western Algarve coast.

In this important tourist spot of Vila do Bispo, there are still some traditional aspects, such as: interesting houses and a whole series of small streets and curious Alleys, scattered along the slope where the town is located, some of which provide an excellent panoramic view of the sea and the surrounding cliffs, such as Cerro da Canela and Ponta de Almádena (to the west).

Vale de Boi (situated between two imposing hills with rock formations, right next to National Road 125) is one of those villages whose origins are stifbered in a certain mystery.
