Description

As described in the Belmonte County Roadmap - City Council Publication:

'The Palacete dos Quevedo Pessanha is a magnificent 18th century baroque building with a two-story L-plan, chapel adjacent to the house of the caretakers.

The facades of this mansion are rhythmic in order of Tuscany pilasters and the windows have, for the most part, downcast arch and curved pediment interrupted by a small plinth that supports central concheado.

The main facade has a decentered portal with access by means of a staircase with granite guards and a small porch with side benches. At the front there is a kind of patio with garden.

In the wedge of the main facade with the side, which accompanies the street, stands out a huge stone of weapons in a card profusely decorated with vegelatists and concheados volutas.

The encimar the coat of arms is observed a human figure who bears a flag and that tradition identifies as Duarte de Almeida the Decepado, Hero of the Battle of Toro, bearer of the royal banner, ensign major of D. Afonso V.

The Chapel, whose orago is Our Lady of Carmo has a main facade facing the said courtyard / garden torn by portal in arch shot down with frame, cimaed by curved pediment interrupted by card formed by corners, with cross to the center, overcome by crown. On this comes a quadruped oculus.

The facade of this chapel also has a double frieze, convex upper and cornice covered by latin cross on voluted plinth at the apex, being flanked by apilasted wedges, signed by gummy pinnacles.

The bell, which is on the wall cloth, (adossada to the Bell of the chapel) presents the date of 1752.

It is composed of perfect back arch and rests on protruding imposed with curved cornice finish and latin cross. Next to the portal that is torn in this wall cloth that partlands from the farm is a granite chair with 18th-century standard tiles.'

In this building presented in the historical years as the most wonderful Solar da Beira Baixa and whose initial construction dates back to 1644, new concepts of architecture are clearly visible, such as the changes introduced by Mannerism (deliberate deportation of the rule of rules, ambiguity, simulation and hidden symbology) and the Renaissance, with the concepts of balance, harmony and beauty. The gate and windows are arched down, with curved pediment interrupted with central concheado. The shell or scallop is a symbol of pilgrims who walk the path of Santiago, which also appears at the gate and was used to drink water in the multiple fountains, which are on the way to Compostela. It means protection and search for knowledge and was returned to the sea at the end of the pilgrimage.
