Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain and capital of the Catalonia region. One of the most important cultural destinations in southern Europe, the city has a history dating back to the time of the Roman Empire thanks to its strategic position and port. Strolling through town it is possible to see evidence of Barcelona’s history: the Roman ruins of Casco Antiguo, the medieval buildings in the Barrio Gótico, the famous architecture of Gaudì and modernist Barcelona, right up to prestigious modern constructions by some of the biggest names in contemporary architecture including Meier, Calatrava, Foster e Gehry. The city is divided into 10 districts. The most prestigious are Eixample and Sarrià-Sant Gervasi. Eixample is the neighbourhood near the Sagrada Familia and is home to the “Quadrat d’Or” which contains some of the most famous examples of modernist buildings. A growing number of international buyers look for property in this district, particularly around the famous Paseo de Gracia with its exclusive boutiques and designer stores. Many of the buildings in this area are of high cultural importance and to own a property in this neighbourhood is a symbol of great prestige. The other exclusive district of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi is favoured by the Catalan upper-classes. Unlike the city centre, the most popular homes here are modern, for example the contemporary penthouses with views over the city or magnificent villas with swimming pools and gardens. However there are also historical buildings and noble homes, especially in the areas of Tres Torres and Bonanova. Other high-level properties often sought-after by wealthy buyers are the apartments in Pedralbes or the panoramic penthouses overlooking the sea and the beach of Barcelona.
