Monte Gordo is a portuguese parish in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo Antonio, with an area of 4.12 km² and 3,197 inhabitants. Its population density is 777.0 inhabitants/km². It was elevated to the village on June 12, 2001. Just 3 km from Vila Real de Santo Antonio, this former fishing village, situated between a vast pine forest and the sea was a pioneer in tourist exploration in the Algarve, with the construction of one of the first hotels in the region in the 60's (Hotel Vasco da Gama) and was therefore for several decades a destination of choice for the Portuguese and famous aristocracy. After the Carnation Revolution of 1974 it became a favorite summer destination for the Portuguese middle class.
With an extensive and beautiful beach, a mild climate and several pedestrian areas, on portuguese sidewalk, Monte Gordo is one of the main tourist destinations of the Algarve. The fact that it is located in a bay makes the sea relatively calm and one of the safest beaches for children in the Algarve. The average air temperature fluctuates from a minimum of 11°C in January to a maximum of 26°C in August, while the average sea temperature fluctuates from a minimum of 16°C in February to a maximum of 22°C between July and September, making it the warmest sea beach in mainland Portugal.
