Description

An ensemble of buildings that stands out from the usual construction methods of the time - this was master bricklayer Riehmer's idea at the end of the 19th century, which he implemented with flying colors. Because Berlin during industrialization was characterized by narrow back buildings with their inner courtyards. Riehmer abandoned this scheme – entirely in the spirit of sophisticated living quality – and instead created a private street and generous garden areas between the 18 houses. So he created a quiet, green idyll in the middle of the city. The landscape planning design of the courtyard garden envisages a variety of uses: In addition to the islands of peace embedded in a varied planting, there will be meeting areas under old trees, but also natural play areas and a boules area. Garden elements such as floating wooden benches, natural stone and sculptures complement each other harmoniously with paths and beds. Riehmer's Hofgarten is very centrally located and well connected in the middle of Kreuzberg. It is an ideal starting point for people who enjoy the liveliness of the big city with its diverse offerings and at the same time don't want to miss the peace and quiet of an urban retreat. Hardly any other Berlin district is as multicultural as Kreuzberg, where a casual, tolerant and open community has emerged from a wide variety of lifestyles. Here, the contrasts are seen as enrichment and the diversity is cultivated, which is particularly evident in the gastronomy with its cuisines from all over the world, in the colorful weekly markets and in the lively street scene. There's the little stationery next to the coffee roastery, there's the Turkish greengrocer next to the chic advertising agency, and there's the little variety theater in the back yard - the colorful mix is what makes Kreuzberg so endearing. This special attitude to life is complemented by the numerous parks and green spaces as well as the banks of the Landwehr Canal and rounded off by the diverse art and cultural offerings. During the restoration of Riehmer's Hofgarten, monument conservators and restorers traced down to the smallest detail elements of the construction period. Many questions arose: How were the walls covered and what colors were the wooden elements painted? Where were there still traces of primer? How were the colors of the stucco elements coordinated? Every possible clue was followed up on - and sometimes they were even hidden as fragments of wallpaper behind skirting boards. Carpenters, painters and locksmiths have worked carefully in detail to renovate the old and combine it with the new.
