Historical framework;
The site of Marvila, as old as the foundation of nationality, is one of the most typical neighborhoods of the eastern part of the city of Lisbon.
Until the 19th century, pleasant farms were succeeded in this vast area of Lisbon and the fertility of the lands bathed by the Tagus was great.
It was until recently an essentially rural parish, where farms and vegetable gardens proliferated.
Even today the examples are easy to detect: Quinta dos Ourives, Rosa, Flores, Amendoeiras, Leal, Marquis de Abrantes...
These properties were mostly exploited by people from the north of the country and stocked the street markets, scattered throughout the neighborhood, the neighborhood and, later, throughout the capital.
At the old market of Praca da Ribeira, the goods arrived transported by wagons.
This population originally from the north brought many of its habits and customs, namely the Feira da Espiga, which may originate in a custom of the northern horteloes.
